British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who threaten our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
